If you've been learning about healthy living, you may have heard of health coaching; but do you know how health coaching works, or what health coaches actually do?

Let me tell you more about this collaborative, whole-health approach to lifestyle and behaviour change for improved well-being

Why Health Coaching?

Around a third of people in the UK currently live with lifestyle-related chronic illness. These illnesses can seriously impact quality of life, and place a huge burden on our healthcare system. Yet for most people, they can be prevented or effectively treated with lifestyle change.

I suspect this isn't really news - we know that our unhealthy habits damage our health. But although most of us want to feel healthier and happier, we find it difficult to make the necessary changes. We feel overwhelmed with conflicting information about what we 'should' be doing. We're not sure how or where to start. We struggle to keep changes going long-term. We lack motivation, direction and support.

If you've ever said...

  • "I would exercise, but I'm too tired when I get home."

  • "I've tried every diet but none of them work, so I've given up."

  • "I want to give up smoking / sugar / alcohol, but it calms my stress."

  • "I want to cook healthier meals but I don't have the time."

  • "I'll be happy if I lose weight / get a new job / feel more confident."

... then health coaching can help.

A health coach is a non-judgemental ally, providing the tools, education, support and accountability to overcome these challenges. Specialising in behavioural change and trained in physiology, nutrition and fitness, they help you build confidence in making conscious, sustainable lifestyle choices that promote physical and mental well-being.

By teaching you how the body and mind work, demonstrating the impact of habits, and equipping you with strategies for long-term change, they empower you to take charge of your health. Recognizing each person as the expert of their own life, they offer personalised guidance to build motivation and break through resistance, helping clients thrive rather than just survive.

Is This The Start of Something Great?

So now you know how a health coach can help you, what does the process look like?

The first step is a free, 30 minute call where we explore your goals and challenges. This is an opportunity to learn more about each other, to ask questions, and to see how we get on. It’s informal, with no pressure and no commitment. The aim is to find out if we're a good fit.

Like any other relationship, a coaching relationship is built on mutual respect and trust, so this step is essential to ensure success in the rest of the coaching journey. And if we're not a good fit, that's ok! We can agree to just be friends. 🙃

Laying The Foundation For Change

If you decide to take the leap, your first coaching session will start with a review your health history, diet, exercise, sleep habits and stress levels. This in-depth assessment may feel personal, but there’s no judgment—I’ve likely been there myself! Your answers will help us uncover the root causes of your health challenges and identify beneficial changes.

Once we understand your current health and habits, we move onto the exciting part!

Health Coaching is client-led; I'll guide you through the process, but you are the one who decides what changes to make. So this is the point where you picture your ideal, healthy future, and decide how you're going to get there. You’ll choose your goals, and together we’ll break them down into achievable steps, planning your approach and preparing for any obstacles you might encounter. I’ll offer information and suggestions, but don’t worry—I won’t push extreme workouts or tasteless food. Remember, you’re in control, you can take what works and leave what doesn’t.

After the session, you’ll have a detailed health plan to take away, along with resources to support your progress. You’ll have a few weeks to implement your changes, and I’ll be on hand for questions or support as needed.

Learning, Adjusting and Moving Forward

Your subsequent coaching sessions will be spaced a few weeks apart, each starting with an honest check-in on your progress so far. We’ll celebrate all your successes, and tackle any challenges. There's no blaming or shaming - instead, we’ll focus on understanding what happened, and what to adjust for next time.

Each session covers key aspects of well-being, depending on your needs and goals. We'll explore topics such as motivation, habit formation, impactful lifestyle factors, and sustainable long-term change. I'll be helping to guide, motivate, and sometimes gently nudge you back on track. Then you'll choose your next steps, and we’ll add them to your health plan.

By the end of your 3-month programme, you'll be feeling the benefits of your hard work. Embedding new habits takes time, but once you experience the impact of your changes you'll be motivated to keep going - and you'll have the confidence and knowledge to do so.

As a goodbye gift, I'll share extra tools and resources to support your progess such as mindset tips, recipes, movement ideas, stress-reducing exercises, meditations or habit-hacking templates. You'll leave empowered, equipped, and ready to sustain your healthy future.

What now?

Well, if you're ready, now is the time where you take that first step.

If this Health Coaching thing sounds good to you, let’s make it happen.
